Michael John Brennan[1][2] (born 30th November, 1998),[2][3] known professionally as Michael Mikey Brennan (mostly referred to as "Mikey") is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Born in Leytonstone, East London and raised in Maidstone, Kent, Brennan attended Bower Grove School, where - in collaboration with his music teachers Mr. Croft and Mr. Starks - he recorded his self-titled debut album (2015)[4] and a compilation album of covers (2016).[5] He built a fanbase through social media, publishing musical content to sites such as YouTube.[6] Following his graduation in 2015, and an entire summer spent of outings, Brennan's songwriting became highly influenced by early folk and country music, the initial result was two new original songs, "Home"[7] and "The Drinking Song".[8] Brennan subsequently reunited with former Year Five school mate, Tom Blashford who went on to produce his second studio album, "Dreamer" (2019) which incorporated influences from folk, country, pop, blues, rock, progressive rock, classical and world music.[9]

After leaving Bower Grove with unsuccessful GCSE results,[10][11] Brennan enrolled onto the music study program at MidKent College where he arose as one of their most successful students, starting on and gradually progressing from Level 1 to the Level 3 emerging as a Distinction* performance student, winning the Exceptional Effort student award and Principal's Choice award at the college's student award ceremony in 2017.[12][13] He has been described by the college principal Simon Cook as "the most amazing student".[13] As of September 2019, Brennan is a university student at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford.[14]

Early Life

Michael John Brennan[1][2] was born at Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone, East London on 30th November, 1998[1][3][2] to Irish Catholic parents, Della Josephine Brennan[2][15] and Barry Grogan.[15][Notes 1][Notes 2] He has a twin brother, Kieran Joseph Brennan,[15] born a minute later.[15][16] For unknown reasons,[Notes 3] the two brothers were put into foster care at a young age[17][18] and were fostered in July, 2002,[17] at the age of three by a married couple; Diane Mary Care (née Scott)[Notes 4] a former office worker and nursery carer of Scottish descent and originally from Scotland, who pursued homemaking after fostering Brennan and his brother[15]; and Mark Ian Care, a full time carpenter.[15] They moved to Maidstone, Kent where from there and onwards they were raised for the remainder of their childhood. They were officially adopted later in November, 2016 following their eighteenth birthday.[15][17]

Brennan developed an interest in singing at a young age through his love for Disney films and their various soundtracks which he would sing along to as a child.[19] His all time favourite Disney song is Randy Newman's "You've Got A Friend in Me" from the Toy Story films,[Notes 5] which he later covered.[20][21] The original Toy Story has been Brennan's all time favourite film ever since he was three.[22] He also enjoyed DreamWorks Animation soundtracks,[23] and was particularly fond of John Cale's version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" from Shrek[Notes 6] which later inspired him to cover the song himself.[24][25] Upon its first air on Channel 4 in November, 2004 following a recent axe from its previous UK broadcasting channel BBC Two,[26][27] Brennan became a great fan of the American animated sitcom The Simpsons,[28] after being introduced to it by his father who he and his brother watched the show under parental guidance of.[29] It has been Brennan's favourite tv show ever since.[30][28][31][32][33] Through the episode Stark Raving Dad, Brennan discovered American pop star Michael Jackson whom he subsequently developed a fondness and obsession for after listening further.[34][35]

Holy Family

As Catholics, Brennan and his brother attended primary school at Holy Family Catholic Primary School in Park Wood.[15][36] With the school, they would attend monthly church services at the Holy Family Catholic Church (located next to the school),[37][38] where through singing hymns and carols Brennan became confident in his ability to sing, claiming to have "learned how to sing in the Lord's house".[39] He would also participate in the school choir; at the age of eight, when he was in Year Three, Brennan had his first live performance as part of an ensemble with the school choir at Leeds Castle in December, 2006 entertaining the locals, singing carols. Brennan and his fellow choir participants were rewarded for their performance with free tickets to see Father Christmas at the Santa's Grotto. Half way through Year Three, Brennan's mother began to notice a change in her son's behaviour and character; she believed the character Horrid Henry was a bad influence on him, and thus, Brennan was banned from watching the TV show, though he continued to watch it behind her back. Brennan claims that his parents also cited Bart Simpson as a bad influence on his behaviour,[40] but he was never banned from watching The Simpsons. He also claims that Bart Simpson was a bigger influence on his "Mean Mikey" persona than Horrid Henry,[40] and that Norman Price from Fireman Sam, whom he discovered prior to Horrid Henry and Bart Simpson, was the earliest influence.[41] Despite this, he has admitted that out all of them he relates to Horrid Henry the most.[42] Despite being said to have had an obsession with the Horrid Henry TV series signified by the references in his "Mean Mikey" song,[43] Brennan claims that he was actually more into books, though he has not confirmed nor denied his alleged obsession.[42] By Year Four Brennan's behaviour at school got out of hand, he also found himself struggling with his studies, believed to be on account of his ADHD.[44] He dropped out after Year Four and transferred to a special school, Bower Grove School, where he continued his two remaining years of primary school education and next five years of secondary school.[15]

Brennan joined Bower Grove School in September, 2008.[45] His first ever music teacher was Miss Rebecca Linn who taught him throughout his first year at the school, when he was Year Five. From Year Seven and onwards he was taught by the school's senior and main music teacher, Mr. Daniel "Danny" Wells who also had a talent for art and had pursued a career as a sketch artist for a number of films in the past, including Who Framed Roger Rabbit.[46][47] Alongside Wells, Brennan was also taught by the school's music LSA, Mr. Toby Starks, a professional musician and member of local Kent bands such as Wheeler Street (named after the street of the same name in Maidstone)[48] and his family band, The Starks Family Band.[49]

Angels

Brennan, aged 11, performing at Bower Grove School in 2009.

In December, 2009 when he was in Year Six, Brennan aged 11, performed Robbie Williams' "Angels" in the school assembly as part of his junior Christmas production, The Xmas Factor - based on the ITV talent show The X Factor - as a homage to the angels from the Christmas story.[50] Brennan claims that coincidentally the performance took place on 10th December two days prior to a performance of the song on The X Factor 2009 final, featuring current X Factor contestant and finalist at the time, Olly Murs and special guest, Robbie Williams himself.[51][52] Brennan and his classmates featured on the school's debut Christmas CD that year, singing the Christmas carol "Away In A Manger".

A year later, Brennan began having one-to-one singing lessons with Starks and also featured on the school's Christmas charity single, "Another Bower Grove Christmas" - alongside the other staff and pupils - which was released on 18th November, 2010.[53] The song was inspired by the 1984 Band Aid Christmas charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?"[54] and was written by Starks,[55] alongside Wells who carried out lyric duties with Starks. Brennan state that he considered "it a true honour" to have been a part of the single,[56] stating that "it will always be one of my favourite Christmas songs".[57] The school released a second Christmas CD the following year which was sold at the Christmas community fair like the previous one from 2009. It featured the original demo of "Another Bower Grove Christmas" (performed by Starks),[55] and two covers of two traditional Christmas carols; "Ding Dong Merrily On High" performed live in assembly by the entire school[58] and "The Twelve Days of Christmas"[59] on which Brennan featured alongside various other pupils, where he sang the line: "On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me; nine ladies dancing".[59]

In September, 2011 when he was in Year Eight, Brennan met and befriended the school's newly employed maths and music teacher, Mr. Andrew "Andy" Croft. The two were introduced to each other by Brennan's at the time form tutor, Mrs. Elizabeth "Liz" Brother-wood who had requested for Croft to lecture Brennan in some additional one-to-one music lessons. The two bonded instantly through their shared love for The Simpsons and Glee and passion for music, especially acts such as Michael Jackson and The Beatles.[60] Brennan and Croft would spend their lunch breaks playing songs such as "Grenade" and "Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars,[61][62][Notes 7] "Replay" by Iyaz,[Notes 8] "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey and Beatles songs, such as; "Let It Be", "Yellow Submarine", "Hey Jude" and "Twist and Shout".[63] The pair started writing songs together in December. Respectively Brennan would write lyrics, which he and Croft would subsequently write music to accompany.[64][65][66] A similar songwriting process to Elton John and Bernie Taupin and Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

BGS Glee Club

Following in the footsteps of his favourite Glee character Will Schuester, Croft founded the school glee club which he subsequently volunteered to run.[67] The club took place on a weekly basis at lunchtimes. Brennan attended the club to participate and assist and accompany Croft. The club made their debut assembly performance in January 2012, where they performed Lady GaGa's "Telephone" (featuring Beyoncé), Brennan, however chose not to participate, claiming to have declined the invitation fearing the embarrassment of performing a female song and getting mocked, whilst admitting that he was secretly a fan of GaGa and Beyoncé, as well as other pop princesses like Rihanna and Katy Perry.[68] Brennan was also secretly a Justin Bieber fan; Croft claims, "one minute [Brennan] would be with his mates slagging Bieber off and the next, behind their backs he'd be listening to him with [Croft]".[69] Because of this, Brennan also turned down singing Bieber's Christmas hit "Mistletoe" in a Glee club rehearsal session in December, 2012 when Croft recommended the song. In April 2012, Croft was asked for his Glee club to perform a song at the upcoming Easter service assembly, unsure of what song to choose, Croft turned to Brennan for suggestions. Eager to perform a song by his all time favourite artist, Brennan suggested Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" which Croft agreed to, much to Brennan's delight. The Glee club were aided in the performance by special guests, the Valley Park School music students.[35]

During the first four months of Year Eight, inspired by the Horrid Henry book series written by Francesca Simon and illustrated by Tony Ross, the Beano comics,[70][71] and the plot of the 2011 live action film, Horrid Henry: The Movie,[42] Brennan had been writing a book called "Mean Mikey" about a character of the same name whose personality resembles that of Horrid Henry and Bart Simpson,[40][42] but according to Brennan is based more on himself.[72] Initially to promote the book's release,[Notes 9] Brennan desired to create a hip hop/R&B inspired[73] song of the same name, which he requested Croft's assistances for. The pair began writing the "Mean Mikey" song in January, 2012, drawing inspiration from Michael Jackson,[43][73][Notes 10] and the two songs; "Do The Bartman", a song from The Simpsons, performed by Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson),[40][73][74][Notes 11] and "Too Cool For School", a song from Horrid Henry: The Movie, performed Theo Stevenson who played the title character in the film.[42][73] After a long process,[Notes 12] the song was finally finished and recorded by end of the school academic year in July, 2012. The single was released on 5th October, 2012[75] with a music video - featuring a storyboard of illustrations designed by Brennan - to accompany it.[43]

In November, 2012 the school Glee club's final assembly performance took place, where they performed an a cappella version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" (sang as "Santa Claus Is Coming To School"; referencing the upcoming school Christmas fair of which would have a Santa's Grotto for children to visit Father Christmas). Brennan participated in the performance performing an improvised rap.[76] No more assembly performances proceeded from then on after, due to lack of participants. Although the club continued to run, Brennan dropped out in 2013 due to the pressure and stress of trying to maintain his club attendance with his school work, he also wanted to focus on his own respective music and performances. "Mean Mikey" was proceeded by the release of Brennan and Croft's second composition "A Dream" on 21st December, 2012.[77][78] The pair performed the song at the school's Christmas dinner in front of their fellow peers, two days prior to its release.[79]

Me and starks

On 23rd January, 2013 Brennan published two studio recorded covers, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"[24] and Ed Sheeran's "Lego House"[80] to YouTube in a playlist tiled, "On The School Stage EP".[81] The two covers were recorded after a performance of the two songs with Mr. Starks in the school's music assembly (hence the playlist name) on 6th July, 2012.[81][82] Starks produced and provided instrumentation to the covers.[24][80] Brennan and Starks originally wanted to perform "The A Team" but were told that it wasn't appropriate for a school assembly performance, due to its lyrical references towards drug use.[Notes 13] "Hallelujah" and "Lego House" was proceeded by Brennan and Starks' cover of "When You Say Nothing At All", published to YouTube on 19th April, 2013.[83] The cover blended elements of both Ronan Keating's 1999 version of the song and the 1995 version by Alison Krauss and Union Station; played with the chord progression as Krauss' version, but with backing vocals by Starks and a flute solo in vein of Keating's version.[83]

Brennan and Croft released their third and what ended up being final original song, "Can't You See Me" on 3rd August, 2013.[84] Brennan provided head voice-harmonising as an ode to one of his favourite falsetto singers, Justin Timberlake.[85][35] While Brennan wasn't so fond of the song himself, citing it as "one of the worst songs [he's] ever written" and describing it as a "sad blunt love song" and "unlistenable to [his] ears",[86] Croft cites it as his favourite out of the three songs the two wrote together. The song concluded Brennan and Croft's trilogy of songs which later became known as the Michael Mikey Brennan and Mr. Croft trilogy (the Mikey and Mr. Croft trilogy for short),[87] as Brennan was scheduled to start his GCSE Music studies in September which Croft would be lecturing him in. Croft also found himself unavailable throughout 2014, due to his wife being pregnant with the couple's first child.[88] The single release of "Can't You See Me" included a double b-side, comprising of a live unedited studio outtake of the song and a cover of Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are".[84][61]

After "When You Say Nothing At All", Brennan and Starks began recording a cover of Enrique Iglesias' "Hero" in July, 2013, following a band performance of the song - Brennan (vocals), Starks (guitar), Wells (bass), Croft (keyboard) and PE teacher, Mr. Jordan Weller (drums) - in the school music assembly that month.[89] Due to other priorities, Brennan and Starks were unable to complete it before the summer holidays, but finished it in early November the following academic year, after which they recored Brennan's solo version of "Another Bower Grove Christmas" which was released on Christmas Eve.[90][91] "Hero" was published on 29th January, 2014 and rose as one of Brennan's most successful covers, gaining a maximum views and positive feedback from Iglesias' fans.[92][93][94] Brennan and Starks covered several other songs that year too, such as; "Believe in Yourself" (by Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers) the theme song for children's television series, Arthur in February;[95] Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" in March,[96] inspired by Brennan's past performance of the song at the school Easter service with the school glee club and Valley Park music students,[97] and "You Are Not Alone" in June;[98] Randy Newman's "You've Got A Friend In Me" from Disney/Pixar's Toy Story film franchise, in July;[20] and acoustic remakes of their previously covered covers, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (Jeff Buckley-esque)[99] and Ed Sheeran's "Lego House",[100] both released in April under the YouTube playlist, "On The School Stage EP - Acoustic",[81] the follow up to the original 2013 "On The School Stage EP".[82]

In March, 2014 Brennan announced via Twitter that he was officially in the process of making an album,[101] and later confirmed that already recorded tracks such as; "A Dream",[102][64] "Can't You See Me",[103][65] "Mean Mikey",[104][66] "Hallelujah",[105][106] "Lego House"[107][108] and "Another Bower Grove Christmas"[109][110] would feature, amongst other original songs he was currently writing.[111] Now a father, Croft found himself unable to assist Brennan in any further songwriting non-GCSE related. Brennan subsequently turned to Starks who aided Brennan with the rest of the songs from the album.[112] The last song Brennan and Croft wrote together was a song called "Hush My Little Baby", written in February 2014, from the perspective of Croft, the soon to be father. The song was set to be Brennan and Croft's comeback son for 2014, but Croft never had the time to properly record it with Brennan, due to the upcoming birth of his child. However, a demo was recorded which Brennan shared on 22nd August, 2015[113] after the two went their separate ways, following Brennan's graduation from the school. Croft's baby boy, Edward David Michael Croft[114][Notes 14] was born in March, 2014.[115] Through previous research on the Arthur theme song, "Believe in Yourself", Brennan came across a cover of the song by Sons of Admirals,[Notes 15][35] out of which he discovered 1/4 member Charlie McDonnell (charlieissocoollike), a British YouTuber/Vlogger[116] whose solo music became a major influence on Brennan's songwriting,[117] and as such, several tracks from the album used ukulele.[Notes 16] McDonnell's time lord rock band Chameleon Circuit and their passion for writing songs about their favourite tv show Doctor Who, inspired Brennan to write a song about his own favourite tv show, The Simpsons, of which possessed the same name.[118]

Inspired by the Arthur theme song "Believe In Yourself" he previously covered and "The Best Day Ever" a song performed by Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants and from the TV series[Notes 17] and 2004 film,[119][35] Brennan wrote "The Best Day Of My Life" during a GCSE music lecture with Croft, whilst improvising within a C major chord progression on an acoustic guitar.[35] He recorded the song with Starks in October, 2014. He teased the song on 22nd October, expressing a fondness for his own work, describing it as "the best song [he'd] ever written".[120][121] The ukulele on the song was payed by the school assistant science and music teacher, Mr. Green,[122] a professional musician like Starks (known under the name William Harper, formerly Dirty Hippy as a solo artist)[123] and member (under the name Miser Bill) of Maidstone hippy band, Hobo Jones And The Junkyard Dogs.[124] Same time that month, Brennan featured - alongside his fellow pupils and staff - on the school's cover of the 1996 song "God Only Knows", originally performed by The Beach Boys, a version inspired by the recent BBC Music remake,[125] co-produced by Beach Boys lead singer, Brian Wilson who also featured on the cover alongside various other artists.[Notes 18][125] The school's version was recorded in dedication to Children In Need 2014[126] and, produced by Green who also featured on the cover.[127] Brennan uploaded the cover to YouTube on 28th November.[126] In 2015, as part of his GCSE Music coursework, Brennan recorded a solo acoustic version of his cover of "Hero",[128] which Starks aided him with playing the acoustic guitar and an ensemble band performance of "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers which Croft (keyboard), Starks (drums) and Wells (bass) aided him in.[129] Green was originally scheduled to play guitar for the performance but was unable to attend.[130][131] Brennan also wrote two songs of two contrasting genres (as per assignment requirements) inspired by and named after two of his favourite favourite films; "Toy Story" a children's pop/comedy-inspired song about his love for the film trilogy[22] and "Narnia", a musical-inspired song about the battle between the armies of Peter Pevensie and the White Witch in the 2005 Disney fantasy film, "The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", based on the book by C.S. Lewis.[132]

Bower Grove School's Recording Studio

Bower Grove School's recording studio where Brennan recorded his album and covers and shot a music video for "The Best Day Of My Life".

Brennan's debut self-titled album was released on 1st June, 2015,[4] although the tracks were available as respective audio tracks on YouTube as of 22nd May, prior to the album's release.[133] The album was distributed by the school ICT teacher and Assistant headteacher, Mr. Matthew "Matt" Evans,[Notes 19][134] who also distributed "Another Bower Grove Christmas", via CDBaby in 2010.[135][136] The album included; Brennan and Croft's trilogy - "A Dream",[102][64][137] "Can't You See Me"[103][65][138] and "Mean Mikey"[104][66][139] -; Brennan and Starks' covers of "Hallelujah"[105][106][140] and "Lego House";[107][108][141] Brennan's solo version of "Another Bower Grove Christmas";[109][110][142] Brennan and Palmer-Thompson's song "Because I Love You", a solo stripped back version by Brennan;[143][144][145] Brennan's fan-made songs about Toy Story[146][147][148] and The Simpsons;[149][150][151] and "The Best Day Of My Life",[120][121][152] along with two other new songs; an acoustic track, "You And Me"[153][154][155] and "College Buddies".[156][157][158] In promotion of the album's release, Brennan and Starks made a music video to accompany their favourite song from the album, "The Best Day Of My Life".[4] The video was shot in the school recording studio[Notes 20] where Brennan's covers, "The Best Day Of My Life" and other tracks from the album were recorded.[159][Notes 21] It premiered on YouTube on 14th June, 2015.[160] Inspired by their recent acoustic version of their "Hero" cover recorded for Brennan's GCSE Music assignment, Brennan and Starks subsequently concluded their covers project with acoustic versions of their covers of "When You Say Nothing At All" (Ronan Keating-esque),[161] "Man in the Mirror" (James Morrison-esque)[162] and "Believe in Yourself", the Arthur theme song.[163] They also recorded a duet version of their "You've Got A Friend In Me" cover, inspired by the duet version by Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett from the end credits of the first Toy Story film. The cover consisted of Brennan singing Lovett's lines and Starks singing Newman's lines.[21]

Bower Grove School 2008 - 2015

Brennan graduated from Bower Grove School on 26th June, 2015, the same day on which his class' graduation ceremony took place on.[164] The school headmaster, Mr. Phipps - whom Brennan shared a strong bond with, through their love for Toy Story.[165][166] - retired the same year, passing the torch to the former deputy head, Mrs. Lynn Salter.[167][168][169][170] At the graduation ceremony, Brennan performed with Starks one last time on the school assembly stage where they performed their version of "Lego House" acoustically.[171] The class' graduation song was "See You Again" by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, the theme song for Furious 7.[172]

Graduation From Bower Grove School

Brennan and his classmates at the Year 11 graduation assembly at Bower Grove School in June, 2015.

Despite his hard work, Brennan unfortunately failed GCSE Maths and English, which he believes to be on account of his ADHD[Notes 22] and Anxiety,[Notes 23][173] along with his lack of faith within himself; when retaking his GCSE English exam in June, 2018 three years later, Brennan reflected that: "If Yu-Gi-Oh! has taught me anything it's that you have to believe in yourself and in The Heart Of The Cards in order to win a duel you need to believe you can win. So if I want to pass my English exam I need to believe in myself and believe I can pass".[174] While he may have been unsuccessful in English and Maths, he did however achieve a C grade in his GCSE Music performances and a B in the exam, much to his disappointment as he desired an A.[175] Brennan continued to attend the school's community fairs after leaving, where he performed as a guest; Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way"[176] and Feist's "1234"[177] in 2016, Bob Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind" and Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" in 2017[178] and Billy Bragg's "To Have And To Have Not"[10] and "Between The Wars"[11] in 2018 at the summer fairs. He also reunited in performances with Croft and Starks at the Christmas fairs; performing Elton John's "Your Song"[179] and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"[Notes 24][180] with Croft in 2017 and The Beatles' "Let It Be", Elton John's "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" (from The Lion King) and Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" with Croft and Starks in 2018.[181][182][183]

Brennan's next chapter lied with MidKent College, where in February he had applied to study Vocational Skills in an Creative and Visual Arts (Music Performance and Music Technology) BTEC Level 1 course.[184]

2015 - 2019: Journey Through MidKent College and Dreamer

Main article: Dreamer
No longer having Croft or Starks to aid him following his graduation and departure from Bower Grove School encouraged Brennan to spend his summer holidays furthering himself as a musician and songwriter; teaching himself new chords; experimenting with various chord progressions and styles, attempting to find a new sound for his music - which lead up to the development of his love for folk and country music - and going out and about in search of inspiration for new material.[185] With that, "Home" was born which Brennan composed whilst walking home from Barming in August, 2015 after a day out with his former classmates.[186]

Brennan was enrolled onto his Level 1 Creative and Visual Arts (Music Performance and Music Technology) course at MidKent College on 26th August, 2015.[187] Due to his poor GCSE grades Brennan was unable to qualify for a higher level music course, inquiring him to start on Level 1 before being allowed to progress further.[188] With an E in both GCSE Maths and English instead of the required D grade, Brennan was also unable to reenrol in GCSE classes, inquiring him to take Functional Skills first before earning the right to retake the GCSE exams. With a score of 85% in English and 76% in Maths,[189] Brennan was enrolled onto Functional Skills Level 2 English[173] and Functional Skills Entry Level 3 Maths. Brennan started studying at MidKent on 8th September, 2015.[190] His first ever course tutor and main tutor that year was Steven Keevil,[188] a former filmmaker and director/writer of several short films.[Notes 25][191] Whilst enrolling, Brennan reunited with a former Bower Grove classmate, Mitchell Ripley, also enrolling, who was Brennan's best friend back at school until he left after Year Six and transferred to Grange Park School, an Autistic special school in Wrotham, Sevenoaks where he had studied for the last five years prior to joining MidKent where he and Brennan once again became classmates.[192] Brennan states that he always found Ripley awkward and somewhat discomforting, due to his love and strange obsession for My Little Pony. Nevertheless, they shared a strong bond through their similar personalities, sense of humour and taste in comedy; especially their love for South Park and the work of Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, American Dad, the film, Ted and its recent sequel).[192] Brennan claims that he and Ripley were the "class clowns" of the course: "There was always trouble when we were together; Keevil tried to separate us many times but our bond was too strong and unbreakable, separating us was impossible".[192]

Music Technology

As per interview requirements, in order to qualify for the course, each enrolling CVA student had to write a review on a film of their choice; Brennan reviewed Paddington (2014),[193] which he had recently seen at the cinema.[194] Throughout the year the students would have Cultural Literacy lessons in which they would watch and review short films (such as; Keevil's "Sweet and Sour";[195] the Pixar short films;[Notes 26] and Cinema 16 short films;[Notes 27]), full length films (such as; Cabin in the Woods; Four Eyed Monsters; Taking Liberties; Life in A Day; My Date With Drew; and Whiplash which they saw a special screening of at Odeon Cinema on a college trip),[196][35] television episodes - such as; "The Work Outing" (The IT Crowd) and "Blink" (Doctor Who) -, songs (such as; Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Lemon Demon's "The Ultimate Showdown") and musicals (such as; Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). Brennan was lectured in Level 1 Music Performances studies by Stephen Clee,[197][198] the Level 2 Music Performance course lecture, and the Level 3 Music Technology course lecture, Ben Gurney in Level 1 Music Technology studies.[199] He also had additional music theory-based lectures with Kennie Cotter, the Level 3 Music Performance course lecture,[200][192] through which Brennan studied the history of blues music which developed his interest in the songwriting of blues musicians, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Lead Belly, Howlin' Wolf and the Three Kings of Blues (B.B. King, Albert King and Freddie King).[35][198] Throughout his first year, Brennan would often participate in the college karaoke sessions, performing songs such as James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good",[201] Elton John's "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" (from The Lion King)[202] and "My Girl" by The Temptations.[203][Notes 28]

In October, 2015 Brennan reunited with another former Bower Grove School mate, Thomas "Tom" Blashford (now a personal music producer) after being contacted by the latter via Facebook Messenger. Brennan and Blashford were classmates in Year Five; Blashford subsequently transferred to a new school where he took up Music Technology studies to pursue producing.[185] Blashford had heard Brennan's music which he was impressed by - especially "The Best Day Of My Life" - and interested him in working with Brennan.[185]

In January, 2016 Brennan participated in MidKent's talent competition, MidKent's Got Talent (based on and inspired by ITV talent show Britain's Got Talent) performing an acoustic rendition of "When You Say Nothing At All".[204][205][206] He auditioned on 20th January, 2016 and received positive feedback from the judges who subsequently put him through to the final.[204][207] The final took place on 28th January, 2016 in the MidKent Theatre at the Medway campus.[206] Brennan competed alongside various other students, some of whom included; Level 3 Performing Arts students, Joe Pratt and Oscar Gray;[208][Notes 29] Level 3 Performing Arts student, Phoebe Woollett;[209] one of Brennan's fellow Level 1 Music students, a blind boy, Matthew Wadey;[210][Notes 30] Hebe Davies;[211][Notes 31] and Sophie Foster.[Notes 32][212] Woollett, who performed Demi Lovato's version of "Let it Go" from Frozen won;[209] she was awarded a trophy, while Brennan and the remaining contestants - along with Woollett herself - were each awarded a certificate for their participation.[213] On 30th January, 2016 Brennan released two new original songs, "Home"[7] and "The Drinking Song",[8][Notes 33] both of which were recorded on his iPhone.[214][215]

On Valentine's Day, 2016 Brennan and Blashford released their first collaborative song, "Love Song".[216] The song was later pulled from circulation, due to Brennan and Blashford's dissatisfaction with their own skills and efforts.[217] They later redeem themselves with the release of a follow-up song "Round Once" in April, 2016.[218][Notes 34] The song was later played on an episode of The Malling School's UNIT Radio podcast, "Teddy's Corner" on 16th July, 2016.[219][220]

In June, 2016 Brennan and his fellow Level 1 Music Performance students (one of whom included Ripley)[Notes 35] had their end of year showcase, in which they performed with Clee songs they had learnt and studied throughout the year with the latter,[197][221] thus, including; a traditional African song, "Shosholza"; a blues song, Robert Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom"; and a traditional African-American work song, "Black Betty".[198] Brennan subsequently auditioned for Music Performance Level 2 with a progression performance in front of his tutors and course mates, followed by a one-to-one audition in front of Clee.[192] For his progression performance, Brennan performed "Twist and Shout", inspired by the Beatles' version, with Ripley aiding him[Notes 36] with lead guitar and backing vocals, busting out an improvised solo, while Brennan contributed lead vocals and rhythm guitar to the performance.[222] Initially intending to channel Paul McCartney, Ripley was originally going to play bass for the performance,[223] but the two were unable to access an acoustic bass guitar from the college music department as the only ones available had already been booked out by other music students.[192] Brennan performed in front of Clee on 28th June; he was subsequently offered a place on the course.[192][224] By the end of the academic year he had successfully passed Level 1, justly earning him a place on Level 2.[221][225] On 29th July, 2016 Brennan published a new song, "We Should Be Outside" to YouTube.[226] The song features Ripley (who co-wrote the song alongside Brennan) on guitar and backing vocals.[226] It was recorded on Brennan's iPhone, live acoustically at Lower Lines Park earlier in May.[192] The song was distributed as a single a year later with Brennan and Ripley's performance of "Twist and Shout" as a b-side.[227]

Brennan was enrolled onto Level 2 on 9th September, 2016 and began his first day on 12th.[228] Clee was now his course tutor.[229] Throughout the year he was also taught by newly-employed lecture, Uchan Hatari - an independent self-signed[Notes 37] rapper, known as H-Moor[230][231] -[232] and Cotter temporarily for theory;[Notes 38] Cotter's lectures were subsequently taken over by guest and temporary lecture and drum and bass artist, Erb'N'Dub,[233][Notes 39] who would compose house and drum and bass music with the students.[234][Notes 40][Notes 41] The course comprised of both performance and technology students, all of whom studied the same course but with certain aspects different to each other, based on their area of study choices.[235] Throughout the year, Brennan often busked in the college corridors performing songs such as Busted's "Year 3000".[Notes 42]

Brennan was reunited with some former Level 1 students on Level 2 who had also progressed onto the course,[Notes 43] but also formed a group of new friends, comprising of performance students; Jack Loy (guitar/bass),[236][Notes 44] James Doe[Notes 45] (drums)[237][238][Notes 46] and Harvey Pearmain (drums)[Notes 47],[Notes 48][239] and technology students; Morgan Black,[240][241][Notes 49] Kai Langley,[242][Notes 50] Jack Thorne[Notes 51] (bass/guitar)[Notes 52][243][Notes 53] and Kyle Flello;[244] whom he bonded with through mutual musical interests.

In October 2016, Brennan and Blashford began re-recording Brennan's previously released original song, "Home" for a re-release.[245] Brennan initially wanted to re-record "The Drinking Song" as a b-side to the re-release of "Home", but Blashford disapproved the song's content and rejected.[Notes 54] The new version of the song featured new additional instruments such as harmonica and hammond organ, incorporating folk and progressive rock influences.[246] The single was initially scheduled for a Christmas release,[247] but was delayed due to the priority of Brennan and Blashford's school and college work. It was instead released on 1st February, 2017.[248] It was played on Radio Sunlight's Thursday Night Project Show[Notes 55] by presenter, James Ongley - a former fellow Level 1 student of Brennan -[Notes 56] on 16th February, 2017.[249] The song received positive feedback and comparisons towards the work of Bob Dylan from Brennan's college peers.[250][251][252][253][254][Notes 57] The single's release was later proceeded by the release of an extended play in March,[255] which featured; the single itself;[246][255] a remix by Soundrone;[256][255] a progressive rock-inspired[257][258] instrumental version;[259][255] a radio edit version, adapted from and inspired by the single's prior airplay on Radio Sunlight;[260][249][255] an acoustic version;[261][255] and a b-side track, "Here For You".[262][255]

In March 2017, Brennan and his fellow Level 2 Music Performance students performed at a gig they - along with the technology students - had organised as part of their "Organising An Event" and "Live Music Performance" assignments, lectured by Clee[Notes 58] and Hatari.[Notes 59] The event took place within a two day-basis, divided into two respective shows.[263][Notes 60] The first show took place on 23rd March; Brennan performed Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead Or Alive" - with Loy (guitar), Pearmain (drums), Clee (bass) and fellow vocalists; Carlin Barrington, Peter Claridge-bowler and Matthew Wadey -,[264] Rage Against The Machine's "Killing in the Name" - with Loy (guitar), Thorne (bass) and Pearmain (drums) -[265] and "Fever" by The Black Keys - with Loy, Pearmain, Clee, Barrington, Claridge-bowler and Wadey - featuring guest saxophonists, college staff member, ElijahPaul,[266] and first year Level 3 music student, Magdalena Hannah.[267][268] Prior to the show, "Killing in the Name" was chosen by Thorne and Pearmain who asked Loy and Flello on lead vocalists to aid them. Flello declined as he had already been asked by Hatari to provide technology to the gig. Brennan was subsequently asked to take his place.[263] Brennan was told by Clee to censor the swearing, which Loy, Thorne and Pearmain despised the idea of as it would "violate the purpose of the song", they urged Brennan to perform against Clee's orders, even though under examination conditions.[263] Although disappointed with Brennan's disobedience and behaviour, Clee was impressed with the success of the performance and its impact on the audience. Brennan was let off for his actions and his grade was not affected by any of it.[263] The second show took place on 24th March; Brennan performed Little Willie John's "Fever" (inspired by the Peggy Lee version) - with Loy (guitar), Pearmain (guitar), Clee (bass), Doe (drums) and fellow vocalists, Barrington, Claridge-bowler, Wadey, Emily Jones and Siobhian Reid -[269] and a solo acoustic performance of Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)".[270]

In June 2017, Brennan and his fellow Level 2 Music Performance students - Doe (drums), Jones (vocals) and Reid (vocals) - recorded covers of Imagine Dragon's "Radioactive"[271] and Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends"[272] for their "Recorded Music Performance" assignment.[273] Brennan played guitar in "Radioactive",[271] while Clee (guitar) and second year Level 3 music student, Ryan Homer (bass), a big Green Day fan, aided them with "Wake Me Up When September".[272] The covers were produced by the technology students who were being graded for their own respective roles and contributions.[271][272][273] On 12th June, 2017 Brennan and his fellow Level 2 Music Performance students performed at the college's Level 2 Music and Performing Arts end of year showcase,[274] where Brennan once again performed "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" solo;[275] and "Wanted Dead Or Alive",[276] "Fever" (The Black Keys)[277] and "Fever" (Peggy Lee)[278] with his course mates, Clee and ElijahPaul (on "Fever" by The Black Keys).[277] He also performed Aloe Blacc's "I Need A Dollar", with Loy (guitar), Pearmain (drums), Clee (bass) and fellow vocalists; Barrington, Claridge-bowler and Wadey.[279] Brennan completed Level 2 with a Distinction overall[280] and passes in his Functional Skills Level 2 English and Level 1 Maths,[Notes 61] deservingly earning him a place on Level 3 in September.[281]

In July, 2017 Brennan attended the college's student award ceremony at the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel where he had been nominated for the Exceptional Effort award,[282] alongside other students, Ashley Wyles and Hannah Brown, which to his surprise he won.[12] Later that evening, Brennan won the Principal's Choice Award, hand chosen and presented by the principal of MidKent, Simon Cook, himself. Cook fondly described Brennan as "the most amazing student".[13]

Brennan was enrolled onto Level 3 (a two year course)[283] on 24th August, 2017,[284] where he was reunited with his former Level 2 students; Loy, Thorne, Doe and Pearmain,[285][286][Notes 62] and, met and befriended new enrolling students to the study program; James Parris (guitar/bass), formerly a Performing Arts Level 2 student;[287][285][286] Michael "Mike" Wall (guitar/bass) formerly a Media Level 2 student at the Maidstone campus;[288][285][286] Emma Davies (vocals) formerly a Level 3 Childcare student;[289][285][286] Tamsin Shorter[Notes 63] (vocals),[Notes 64] formerly a Level 3 Health and Social Care student;[Notes 65][285][286] Adam Marks (flute),[Notes 66] formerly a Animal Management Level 2 student;[290][285] James "Jim" Glazzard-Highley (bass);[291][285][286] Mahalia "May" Saussus (vocals);[292][293][285][286] Abigail "Abbie" Goodhew (vocals);[294][295][285][286] Chloe Sales-Butteris (vocals);[Notes 67][296][285][286] and Tomilola "Tomi" Adesida (keyboard).[297][285] Prior to enrolment Brennan performed "Teenage Kicks" by The Undertones with Goodhew, Wall and Glazzard-Highley, alongside second year Level 3 student, Michael King (drums)[Notes 68] at the induction day.[Notes 69][Notes 70][298] Brennan's Level 3 course tutor was Cotter, who is also a professional musician,[Notes 71] multi-instrumentalist[Notes 72][200] and member of function bands, OCD and OC3,[299][300] and later his own personal neo soul band, Small Shark.[301][Notes 73][302] Brennan cited Cotter as "a big inspiration" to him; jokingly stating that, "I watch him perform and sing, and I work hard thinking, right I need to become better than him".[303]

Rochester High Street

In October 2017, Brennan performed in a band with Doe, Parris, Davies, Glazzard-Highley and Adesida at the college Black History Month gig, where they honoured black musical icon, Bob Marley; performing "Could You Be Loved",[304] "No Woman, No Cry"[305][Notes 74] and "Three Little Birds".[306] In November 2017, Brennan was put into a band with Loy, Thorne, Pearmain, Glazzard-Higley, Davies, Shorter and Marks, where as part of their unit, "Live Music Performance To Camera", they were assigned to put together a function band set; the songs chosen were "All The Small Things" by blink-182, "Careless Whisper" by George Michael, "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine" by James Brown, and "Livin' On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi.[307][308][Notes 75] The band was subsequently named "Mikey and the Brennans", a name suggested by Thorne.[35] The band performed the set on the main stage at Rochester High Street on 18th November, 2017.[307][309][310]

Orchestra ONE

Meanwhile in November 2017, for work experience, Brennan, alongside various other young music students and aspiring musicians from various schools and colleges, took part in the eighteenth term of Kent Music's orchestra event, Orchestra One[Notes 76] which began on 11th November, 2017.[311] As opposed to other participants, Brennan did not apply to take part through personal interest, but rather through the recommendation of Kent Music, where he was doing work experience at the time.[312] Brennan also worked at Kent Music for work experience the prior academic year whilst on Level 2;[313] according to Clee, Brennan's work experience the first year was so successful that Kent Music subsequently invited him back for the forthcoming academic year.[12] In Orchestra One, Brennan collaborated alongside other vocal students and aspiring vocalists, and professional singer/songwriter and teacher, Andy Nunn,[Notes 77] in writing an orchestral composition on the planet Neptune,[314][Notes 78][Notes 79][Notes 80] inspired by NASA recordings, as part of the Orchestra's theme that term.[315] In addition, Brennan co-wrote - alongside Nunn - a song about Planet Earth for the orchestra performance's finale song.[316] Brennan jokingly described the song as his and Nunn's version of R.E.M.'s 'Shiny Happy People; stating that in comparison, it was also a "fun catchy, pretty children's pop song".[316] The Orchestra ONE concert took place on Sunday 19th November, 2017 at Weald of Kent Grammar School, Sevenoaks Annexe.[315] Brennan provided vocals and ukulele to the performance.[317] Reflecting on the experience, Brennan said it "was as quite a good experience and a complete honour! I don't usually perform in orchestras I usually perform on stage by myself or with a band, so it was nice to try something new".[318]

Mikey and the Brennans performed their function set once again on 14th December, 2017 at the college's Level 3 Winter gig.[319] Songs like "American Idiot" by Green Day, "I'll Be There For You" by the Rembrandts, the theme song for the American sitcomFriends and "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey were added to the set.[320]

The Flowerpot-0

Brennan performing at The Flowerpot, Maidstone, 9th January, 2018.

Brennan started pub gigging during the Christmas holidays. He made his debut at The Flowerpot in Maidstone on 28th December, 2017,[321] where his former school music teachers, Mr. Starks (with former Wheeler Street band mates, Sophy Blundell and Callum William)[322] and Mr. Green (William Harper) had performed in the past.[323][324][325] At The Flowerpot, Brennan performed a cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in The Wind"[321] and two original songs, "Without You" and "We'll Always Be Together", both of which he was currently in the process of recording with Blashford.[321][326][327][328][329] Brennan was subsequently invited back by The Flowerpot to perform at an open mic night session on 9th January, 2018,[321] where Brennan once again performed "Without You",[330] in addition to "Home" and his acoustic rendition of Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)",[331] a video of the latter made an appearance on MidKent College's Facebook page and received maximum views and attention from the page's followers.[332]

The Deep End

Mikey and the Brennans performing at The Deep End, University of Kent, Drill Hall Library, 30th January, 2018.

On 30th January, 2018, for work experience, Mikey and the Brennans (with the exception of rhythm guitarist, Thorne who was unable to attend) once again performed whilst under the influence of alcohol[333] their function set at The Deep End, a student union pub at the University of Kent, Drill Hall Library.[334] That same night, Brennan and Loy also performed Nirvana's "Territorial Pissings" with Doe and Sales-Butteris.[333][335] The other class function band, Get Out Of My Fish Tank - consisting of the remaining members of the class - also performed under the influence; as a result, a lot of members of the class came into college the following day hungover, which Cotter easily recognised.[333] Although initially amused by it, Cotter was also disappointed by his students' act of unprofessionalism and that a number of his under-aged students had been drinking, and that his elder students had been illegally buying the under-aged students alcohol. Cotter urged his students to not drink prior to performances at any future work experience gigs, otherwise he would not sign off their work experience hours, thus, causing them to fail their study program.[Notes 81][333]
Live At The Deep End, March 2018

Brennan (left) performing live at The Deep End, University of Kent (Drill Hall Library), 6th March, 2018 with his MidKent College Level 3 Music Performance course mates, such as bassist Jack Thorne (right).

Brennan and his course mates performed at The Deep End later again on 6th March, 2018.[336] The gig was originally scheduled for 27th February, 2018 but was postponed due to the blizzard across the country.[337] Brennan, with Loy, Thorne, Parris and Doe performed "Dammit" by blink-182,[Notes 82] "Territorial Pissings" by Nirvana,[Notes 83] "Killing in The Name" by Rage Against The Machine,[Notes 83] and "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica.[Notes 84] This was Brennan's last college performance with Thorne; the latter subsequently dropped out afterwards.[243]

In May, 2018 Brennan performed with Loy, Parris, Doe and Cotter (who replaced Thorne's role as bassist, following the latter's choice to leave college) at an event in the college theatre organised by the second year Level 3 technology students, as part of their assignment. The band once again performed "Dammit", "Territorial Pissings" and "For Whom The Bell Tolls"; along with "Highway To Hell" by AC/DC and "Blind" by Korn.[338]

In June, 2018 Brennan performed at Walderslade Working Men's Club with fellow vocalist, Shorter;[Notes 63] Marks (flute); Adesida (keyboard); and Cotter (drums). The band performed "Let It Be" by The Beatles,[339][340][341][Notes 85] "Kiss From A Rose" by Seal,[340][341] "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley,[340][341][342] "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" by Aretha Franklin and George Michael,[340][341][343][344] "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Elton John and Kiki Dee,[340][341][345] "Human Nature" by Michael Jackson[340][341] and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.[340][341] Reflecting on the experience, Brennan claimed that he was awarded with "free booze" by "some blokes" in the club as a way of appreciation; jokingly stating, "I wasn't expecting that! But, if this is the rockstar's life, I could get used to this".[341] Brennan, Shorter, Marks and Adesida performed together again at the college's student awards ceremony at Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel on 27th June, 2018.[346] Goodhew and Parris also attended the event.[347]

Brennan completed his first year of Level 3 with five Distinctions and one Merit.[348][349] He and his classmates, along with the second year Level 3 leavers, performed at the end of year music gig; Brennan performed a compilation of favourite songs he performed throughout the year, including: "Don't Go Breaking My Heart",[Notes 86] "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)",[Notes 86] "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine",[Notes 87] "Blind"[Notes 88] and "For Whom The Bell Tolls".[Notes 89][349] He also performed "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath and "R U Mine?" by Artic Monkeys,[349] with Doe, Parris, Wall and second year Level 3 student, Duncan Shannon.[Notes 90][349]

Fish Tank Promotions Launch Party

Brennan performing at the Fish Tank Promotions Launch Party; 10th August, 2018.

Brennan continued to gig throughout the summer holidays. On 10th August, 2018 he performed at the MidKent Theatre of what hosted the launch party of Fish Tank Promotions,[350] founded by college theatre technician, Jack Gschaider.[351] Acts such as folk metal band Scars of Sense and metalcore band A Higher Demise, also performed at the event.[Notes 91] Brennan performed a solo acoustic folk punk set of which comprised of covers; "Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones, "To Have And To Have Not" by Billy Bragg, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers and "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" by Green Day;[352] and three punk-inspired original songs written by Brennan; "Without You",[352] and two newly composed originals, "Maidstone" and "Don't Forget About Me (I Won't Forget About You)"[352] that Brennan wrote especially for the gig.[353] On 25th August, 2018 Brennan, along with course mates; Loy, Wall, Sales-Butteriss, Davies and Adesida, performed at the wedding reception of fellow course mate, Tamsin Shorter (now Tamsin Wright) and her husband, Daniel Wright.[354][355] Brennan performed songs such as; Billy Idol's "White Wedding",[Notes 92] Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" (featuring Pharrell Williams),[Notes 92] Elton John's "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" (featuring Kiki Dee),[Notes 93] Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer"[Notes 93] and "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" by Aretha Franklin and George Michael with the bride herself.[Notes 94] On 31st August, 2018 Brennan performed at Red Roar Festival, hosted at Leo's Red Lion in Gravesend.[356][357]

It was unfortunately revealed to Brennan on GCSE Results Day on 23rd August, 2018 that he had failed his GCSE English yet again with a Grade 4 and only four marks away from a Grade 4.[358] Brennan's failing was probably on account of AQA's strict grade boundaries that year; had they been less strict he probably would have passed.[359] Brennan's second year of Level 3 and, fourth and final year of college began on 10th September, 2018.[360] Following an appeal through AQA, Brennan's exam papers were sent off for a remark on 11th September, 2018.[361] The remark later came back as unsuccessful, no changes were made and the grade remained the same. Brennan was subsequently put forward for the November resit,[362] determined to achieve a Grade 4 this time around, proclaiming that: "I'll work, study, revise and practice till it kills me if I have to".[363]

In October, 2018[364][365] the Level 3 music performance students once again played tribute to black musical icons at the college Black History Month gig. Brennan and bandmates, Doe, Parris and Wall were scheduled to honour Michael Jackson (with "Beat It") and Thin Lizzy frontman, Phil Lynott (with "Whiskey In The Jar" and "The Boys Are Back In Town").[365][366][Notes 95][Notes 96] Doe honoured Jackson the previous year - with vocalists; Goodhew and Saussus; Loy (guitar/bass),[Notes 97] Thorne (guitar/bass)[Notes 98] and Marks (flute) - performing "Billie Jean" and "Thriller".[367] Although just as happy honouring Bob Marley, Brennan originally wanted to honour Jackson the first year, but was beaten to it and hence fourth, seised the opportunity the second year.[367] The band kicked off their set with "Beat It" at the afternoon show, with fellow course mates; Davies and Wright on backing vocals;[367][368] and Wall playing Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo.[367] Brennan got overexcited during the performance to the point that his actions got out of hand. Badly influenced by his love for 1970s punk rock and Sex Pistols frontman, Johnny Rotten, Brennan spat water at the audience, which resulted into one student retaliating in punching Brennan, just as the performance of the song ended.[367] The unidentified student[Notes 99] and Brennan were instantly removed from the theatre, cutting the band's set short.[367] Brennan was pulled backstage and escorted to the staff office by Clee where he was held captive.[367] Brennan's friends - including his bandmates - crowded outside the office to see if he was alright, they were blocked from entering by Clee. Brennan's behaviour backstage worsened the situation; he verbally assaulted Clee for "disrespectfully cutting [him] off from [his] friends", and preventing him from performing, though merely for his own protection.[367] Brennan's behaviour got him pulled from the evening show and sent home as punishment. The set carried on regardless, with first year Level 3 student, Kira Naireis ("Beat It"), Cotter ("Whiskey In The Jar") and Wright ("The Boys Are Back In Town") performing in Brennan's place on lead vocals. Both Brennan and the unidentified student were equally punished for their respective misdeeds.[367] Brennan received a written warning,[367] the other student's fete is unknown.[367] Later that evening, Brennan apologised for his actions via Facebook.[368] He made amends with Clee later that month.[367] While his actions may have not led to exclusion or expulsion, they later led to a backlash against Brennan and his reputation and loss of trust and respect from a number of his course mates.[367][369][Notes 100] Brennan later reflected on the incident, jokingly comparing it to Pulp frontman, Jarvis Cocker and his incident with "the King himself" at the 1996 Brit Awards: "[That] was very disrespectful towards MJ but funny looking back. I'm sure MJ forgave him and would forgive me too".[370]

MidKent Oxjam

Brennan and his course mates at MidKent College's OxJam Festival.

In November, 2018 Brennan and his fellow Level 3 course mates performed at a fundraising event in the college theatre, sponsored by Oxjam, and organised by course mate, Sales-Butteriss (an aspiring event manager) to raise money for Oxfam.[371][372] Brennan had been scheduled to the perform a solo acoustic set[373] and a Metallica cover set with Doe, Parris, Wall and Cotter[374] at the event since September, one month prior to the Black History Month gig incident.[373] Following the incident, Brennan was kicked out of the Metallica cover band and subsequently replaced on lead vocals by Cotter.[367] Although dismissing Brennan from the set was on account of the incident, Doe, Parris and Wall also took into consideration that the timing of the songs may have been hard for Brennan, and that he may have also struggled with finding time to learn them as he was busy revising to retake his GCSE English exam at the time, which they knew he was determined to pass.[375] Despite the incident, Sales-Butteriss still allowed Brennan to perform at the event. His set comprised of; "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens, "Charmless Man" by Blur and "I Don't Want To Grow Up" by Tom Waits.[376][377][378]

In December, 2018 Brennan and his fellow Level 3 vocalists; Wright, Davies, Goodhew and Sales-Butteriss, recorded covers of the charity singles "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid (written by frontman of the Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure) and "We Are The World" (written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie) as part of their unit, "Session Musician". The covers were produced by Elijah Paul.[54] In "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Brennan sang the lines originally sung by Paul Young, Simon Le Bon and Sting.[54][379] In "We Are The World" he sang the lines originally sung by Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson and Bruce Springteen.[54]

It was confirmed in January, 2019 that Brennan passed his GCSE English retake exam with a Grade 4.[380] Also that month, the music study program students commenced studies on their external assessments.[381] The previous year Brennan's year and class were assigned to rehearse and perform a set as part of a band; Brennan teamed up with course mates; Loy, Thorne, Doe and Sales-Butteriss. Their set comprised of; "Dammit" by blink-182, "Territorial Pissings" by Nirvana, "White Wedding" by Billy Idol, "Highway To Hell" by AC/DC and "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica.[382][Notes 101] Apart from Glazzard-Highley who achieved a Distinction, the entire class, including Brennan, achieved Merits,[382] much to Brennan's disappointment.[383] This time around Brennan's year and class were assigned to compose a set of songs (within the themes, Conflict and Peace) in twos. Brennan was paired with Marks.[381][382] Having recently passed GCSE English, Brennan had become more confident in himself lyrically as a songwriter.[382] Together, Brennan and Marks wrote four songs; "Oh Honey", a rockabilly-inspired song;[381][382] "The Tramp", a country-inspired homelessness-themed song;[382] and war-themed songs, "The Solider" and "Broken".[382][Notes 102]

In February, 2019 Brennan teamed up with Goodhew, Saussus, Glazzard-Highley, Wall, Adesida and tutor, Cotter to record covers of "Let A Woman Be A Woman" by Dyke and the Blazers and "Loco In Acapulco" by The Four Tops for the technology students as part of their external assessment.[Notes 103][382][384][385]

In May 2019, MidKent hosted a fundraising event to raise money for Guide Dogs For The Blind,[386] at which Brennan and Parris performed an acoustic set, comprising of Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself", Ed Sheeran's "Photograph" and Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin Down".[387]

Motley Crue Tribute Band

Brennan and his Mötley Crüe tribute band (left to right): Samuel "Sam" Doubleday and James Parris (Mick Mars), James Doe (Tommy Lee), Brennan (Vince Neil), Joseph "Joe" Watkins (Nikki Sixx).

In June, 2019 Brennan once again performed at The Deep End in a band with tutor, Cotter (drums), classmate, Wall (guitar) and first year Level 3 music performance student, Jack Green (bass).[Notes 104][388] The four piece band performed songs such as "Pretty Vacant" by the Sex Pistols, Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" by the Eurythmics, "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppard, "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath and the last minute added "Beat It" by Michael Jackson.[389][388][390] Three months earlier in March 2019, Brennan's course mates Doe and Parris were inspired by the recent biopic film "The Dirt" (which aired on Netflix on 22nd March, 2019) to form a Mötley Crüe tribute band and perform a set of the band's songs for a practical assignment which the two would be assessed on. Brennan was subsequently added to the band as lead vocalist, followed by first year Level 3 students; Joseph "Joe" Watkins (bass) and Samuel "Sam" Doubleday (guitar).[391][392] Brennan and Watkins went to Bower Grove together, Watkins was the year below Brennan and followed in the latter's footsteps after graduation and joining the college, starting from Level 1 and gradually progressing up to Level 3.[393] While the remaining members developed their interest in Mötley Crüe through the film, Brennan claims that developed his prior to the film's release after reading Nikki Sixx's autobiography, "The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star" shortly after the release of the Queen biopic film, "Bohemian Rhapsody" in October, 2018.[392] The tribute band performed their cover set under the band name Crötley Müe at the Level 3 self-organised gig, "The Mess Hall" on 12th June, 2019.[394] While Brennan channeled his inner-Vince Neil,[391][392][395][396] his bandmates took up the roles of guitarist Mick Mars (Parris and Doubleday),[391][396] bassist Nikki Sixx (Watkins)[391] and drummer Tommy Lee (Doe).[391] The set comprised of Mötley Crüe songs such as; "Girls, Girls, Girls", "Take Me To The Top", "Live Wire", "Saints of Los Angeles", "Shout At The Devil" and "Kickstart My Heart".[397] Brennan also aided course mate Loy with his practical assessment at the gig, providing lead vocals to performances of "Bombtrack" by Rage Against The Machine, "Robbers" by The 1975 and "Chamber of Reflection" by Mac DeMarco.[397][Notes 105]

These last four years have been an interesting and funny ride; I’ve made great friends, learned and achieved so much (become less of an idiot than I was before) and enjoyed every second of it. A huge thank you to all my lectures from over the years and all my beloved course mates, I love you all so much. I will miss you and will cherish every second, minute, hour, day, week, month and year I’ve spent with all of you for the rest of my life. Influences

The Jackson Family are the biggest influence on Brennan. He cites Michael Jackson as his biggest inspiration,[403][404][405][406][407] whom he harbours a strong fondness and obsession for,[Notes 106] which he first developed as a child after discovering Jackson through The Simpsons episode, Stark Raving Dad[34][Notes 107] (which Jackson guest voiced in).[Notes 108] In a 2016 YouTube vlog Brennan credited Jackson with inspiring him to perform, proclaiming that: "Without [Michael Jackson], I wouldn't be performing this very day [...] I remember when I used to watch [him] on the telly [as a child] and I knew that was the performer I wanted to be".[408] Brennan cites Thriller as his all time favourite album.[35][409] He also cites "Thriller" songwriter Rod Temperton as a major songwriting influence.[410][411] In 2016 he saw the Thriller Live musical at Marlowe Theatre which he was highly impressed with.[412][413] Although he claims not to have a favourite Michael Jackson song, he has described "Music and Me" as "one of the closest songs to [his] heart": "It's a very beautiful and relatable song for anyone who loves music like me".[414] He cites The Jackson 5 as his favourite music group[415][416][417] and claims that as a child he would listen to "I Want You Back" over a hundred times without getting bored.[35] Brennan has described Janet Jackson as the "Queen of R&B",[418] whom he has also cited as a major influence on him as a performer.[419] The lyric, "All the memories come back to me in my mind" from Brennan's song "Without You" was taken from Jackson's song "Again",[420] which he cites as his favourite of her songs.[421]

MJ and Elvis

Michael Jackson (left) and Elvis Presley (right) are Brennan's biggest influences.

While Michael Jackson is his biggest influence, Brennan cites Elvis Presley as his second biggest influence,[422] whom he credits with inspiring him to perform and play guitar.[422][423][424][425] Brennan was first impressed with Presley after being shown a live performance of his version of Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes" in class at school when he was 10 years old.[35][425] Shortly later his dad bought him the 1962 film Girls! Girls! Girls! on DVD, through which Brennan developed a love for the film soundtrack: "I never had any [Elvis] albums growing up, but I always had that film".[426] Recollecting his first time witnessing Presley's stage persona, Brennan stated, "I was completely blown away by his superb stage presence and incredible guitar skills. He was a phonemail performer, he was everything I wanted to be".[35][425] Brennan wrote "Oh Honey" as a tribute to Presley.[381] He is also a fan of other rock 'n roll, rockabilly and rhythm and blues artists, such as Little Richard,[Notes 109][381][427][428] Buddy Holly,[381][428][429][430][431] Chuck Berry,[428][432][433] Jerry Lee Lewis,[428][433] The Everly Brothers,[428] Carl Perkins,[428] Bill Haley & His Comets,[428][434] The Crickets,[428][430] The Bobby Fuller Four,[428] Fats Domino,[428] Bo Diddley,[428] Johnny Cash,[428][433][435][436] Cliff Richard and The Shadows,[428] Eddie Cochran,[428] Ritchie Valens,[428][431] The Big Bopper,[428][431] Roy Orbison[428] and Gene Vincent.[428] He also admires the songwriting of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.[381]

Brennan cites The Beatles - whom he described as "the gods of songwriting" -[437] as his favourite band[438] and a major influence on his songwriting.[439][439] His fondness is shared towards all the members equally, he describes; John Lennon as the "best songwriter"; Paul McCartney as the "best singer"; George Harrison as the "best musician"; and Ringo Starr as "the coolest".[440] Recalling his first time hearing The Beatles, Brennan states, "[It was] back at [school] when I was roughly 11 or 12. My music teacher played me and my classmates the Yellow Submarine music video. I was instantly taken to heaven and finally knew the true meaning of happiness and the four synonyms that define it; John, Paul, George and Ringo".[441] He also cites The Rolling Stones as a major influence; he states that they are "a very important band to Kent musicians" (as frontman Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards are from Dartford). On the impact, Brennan proclaims: "[The Rolling Stones] are pretty much the reason why all of us Kent musicians start writing songs and forming bands".[442] He is also a fan of 1960s rock and proto-punk bands like The Kinks,[443] The Who,[444] The Monkees,[445][446] The Beach Boys,[Notes 110][Notes 111] Fleetwood Mac,[447] The Stooges[448] and The Velvet Underground.[Notes 112]

Brennan is also influenced by the songwriting of Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin.[185][473][474][475] Brennan first discovered John as a child through a Bob the Builder Christmas film, A Christmas To Remember which guest stars John and features "Crocodile Rock".[35][474][476] Brennan's love for The Lion King soundtrack as a child extended his interest in John's music.[19][35][474] His childhood love for Disney and DreamWorks Animation soundtracks also introduced him to singer/songwriters Randy Newman (Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc., Cars),[19][20][21][22][35] Phil Collins (Tarzan, Brother Bear),[19][35][477] Carly Simon (Piglet's Big Movie)[19][35] and Ben Folds (Over The Hedge).[23][35] He also admires the work of singer/songwriters Billy Joel,[478] Tom Petty,[479] Bryan Adams,[480] Bruce Springsteen,[54] Carole King[473] and Edwin McCain.[481] The first concert Brennan watched was Elton John and his band at the Kent Showground on the All the Hits Tour in 2015.[185][474][482][483][484][485] Reflecting on the experience, Brennan said: "I [felt] so honoured, lucky and grateful [to] see [Elton John] live, it was honestly one of the best days of my life to see one of my heroes live in action".[486]

Madonna is another major influence on Brennan as a performer.[487][488] Brennan remembers hearing hits such as "Into The Groove", "Like A Prayer" and "Holiday" on the radio as a child, as well as "Hung Up" and "4 Minutes" upon their releases in 2005 and 2008.[35] "4 Minutes" was the first single Brennan bought.[35]

Brennan cites George Michael as one of the earliest influences on his voice, on whom he states: "I remember hearing his music on the radio as a child and every time a song of [his] came on and I heard [his] amazing voice I always knew that I wanted to become a singer".[489] He cites "Faith" as one of his all time favourite pop songs.[490][491] Brennan auditioned for Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) with "Careless Whisper".[492]

Brennan's songwriting and acoustic style is heavily influenced by folk and country music, on which he cites Bob Dylan,[185][473][493][494] Donovan,[185][473][495] Don McLean,[185][473][496] Woody Guthrie,[185][473][497] Pete Seeger,[185][473] Billy Bragg,[10][11][185][473] Hank Williams,[185][473][498] Roger Miller,[19][473] Leonard Cohen,[24][473][499][500] Jeff Buckley,[99][473][500] Tim Buckley,[473] Hank Williams Jr.,[473] Paul Overstreet,[67][83][161][185][473] Don Schlitz,[83][161][185][473][501] Keith Whitley,[83][161][185][473] Kenny Rogers,[473][501] Glen Campbell,[473] John Denver,[185][186][473] Bobby Goldsboro,[473] Allison Krauss,[83][161][473] Dolly Parton,[185][473][502] Faith Hill,[473][503] Beth Nielsen Chapman,[473][503] The Dixie Chicks,[473][504] Joni Mitchell,[473] Taylor Swift,[473][505] Sheryl Crow,[473] Tracy Chapman,[473] Simon & Garfunkel,[473] Cat Stevens,[185][473] Damien Rice,[185][473] Tom Waits,[473] Neil Young,[473][506] Bon Iver,[473] James Taylor,[473] Jack Johnson,[185][473][507][508] John Mayer,[185][473] Jason Mraz,[67][473][509][510] and James Blunt[67][511] as influences. Whilst at Bower Grove School, Brennan was particularly influenced by his music teachers; Mr. Croft, Mr. Starks, Mr. Wells, Mr. Green and Mr. Lawrence.[35][473] Starks, Green and Lawrence are professional musicians who have all pursued careers in bands; Starks is the lead singer and guitarist of Kent folk bands, Wheeler Street[48] and The Starks Family Band;[49] Green is the guitarist of Kent hippie band, Hobo Jones And The Junkyard Dogs;[124] and Lawrence is the lead singer of rock bands Hildamay,[512] Bayeux[513] and Land Speed.[514] Green has also pursued a career as a solo folk musician under the name William Harper.[123] Starks introduced Brennan to a number of his band's influences and personal influences, including Old Crow Medicine Show, The Stray Birds and Allison Krauss and Union Station.[322][473][515] Brennan states that one of his earliest encounters with folk music was being played Don McLean's "Vincent" in art class whilst studying the work of Vincent van Gough.[473] He also remembers hearing "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root in the 2002 20th Century Fox animated film Ice Age as a child.[23][35][473] Folk rock duo The Proclaimers were also an early folk influence on Brennan, whose song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" the school often sang in assemblies, in addition to "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver, and a traditional Jamaican folk song, "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)", both of which inspired "Home".[35][186][516] Brennan also recalls hearing "I'm On My Way" by The Proclaimers in Shrek as another childhood encounter with folk.[35][473] He also says that the soundtrack to the direct-to-video followup film to Disney's The Fox and the Hound, The Fox and the Hound 2 commenced his love for country music at a young age.[19][23][35][473]

Punk rock has proven to be a major influence on Brennan's stage persona and attitude, influenced highly by that of John Lydon of the Sex Pistols,[367] whose album Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols he cites as his all time favourite punk album.[617] He is also a fan of punk bands like The Clash,[618][619] the Ramones,[620][621] the Misfits,[622] the Buzzcocks,[623][624][625][626] The Undertones,[626][298] Generation X[Notes 115] and Black Flag.[627] Brennan claims he wrote "Maidstone" whilst "constantly listening to" London Calling, the third studio album by The Clash.[628] He is also a fan of post-punk and new wave acts, including Blondie,[629][630] The Cure,[631][632] Joy Division,[584] Public Image Ltd,[367] Wham!,[490][489] Culture Club[584][633] and Duran Duran.[584]

Brennan also cites Green Day as a major influence, whose frontman Billie Joe Armstrong he has shown a particular fondness for.[634][635][Notes 116] In 2017, following the release of Green Day's greatest hits album, "God's Favourite Band",[636] Brennan created his own version of the album in a Spotify playlist, "Michael Mikey Brennan's Favourite Band" (despite the title Green Day are his second favourite band, under The Beatles),[438] which featured a number of his favourite Green Day songs, some of which not were included on the album.[636][637] He is also a fan of other 1990s pop punk bands like blink-182,[308][638][639][640] and MxPx.[641]

Brennan's love for pop punk music began at a young age; he recalls first falling in love with the Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" after hearing Pete Yorn's version of the song in Shrek 2.[624] He also remembers first hearing Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself" during the opening of DreamWorks Animation's Flushed Away.[23][Notes 115] He credits Simple Plan with introducing him to the genre,[642][643] whose song "Grow Up" from the band's debut album No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls he cites as one of his favourite songs as a child,[642][643] which he discovered through one of his childhood PlayStation 2 games Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure,[644] through which he also discovered Allister's "Somewhere on Fullerton" from the band's third studio Last Stop Suburbia.[645][646] Growing up Brennan was a big Scooby-Doo; he loved the live action films, Scooby-Doo: The Movie and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, through which he remembers hearing Simple Plan's "Don't Wanna Think About You" and MxPx's version of the "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!" theme song.[647] He was also loved the tv series What's New, Scooby Doo?, through which he remembers singing along to the the show's theme song - performed by Simple Plan - and hearing the band's song "I'd Do Anything" in the episode "It's Mean, it's Green, it's the Mystery Machine".[23] He is also a fan of other 2000s pop punk and emo bands, such as Sum 41,[648] New Found Glory[649] and Fall Out Boy.[650][651][Notes 117]

British boyband Take That were an early and lasting influence on Brennan whose music he developed interest in through his mother's fondness for them, whom he claims would "overplay" them around the house and in the car.[35][652][653] Brennan also proclaims, "That was a common factor back in the early '2000s, a lot of mums were into Take That [...] if you were a child during the '90s or early '2000s like I was there was no escaping that kind of music if you had a mother who was into Take That".[35] Brennan was especially inspired by Robbie Williams as a solo artist;[35] the first song he performed directly to an audience was "Angels" in his school's Christmas production when he was 11 years old.[35][50][654] He credits Williams as another artist who inspired him to become a performer.[35][654] He also cites Gary Barlow as a major songwriting influence, whom he has described as one of the greatest songwriters in pop music.[35][653] Brennan was particularly inspired by Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Diamond Jubliee release "Sing" performed by Barlow and The Commonwealth Band (featuring Military Wives), which he has described as one of the most inspirational songs of his generation.[35]

Brennan is also a fan of boybands like Backstreet Boys,[35][176] NSYNC,[35] Westlife,[35] Boyzone[35][83][161] and East 17.[35] Growing up he was also a fan of boybands JLS,[35][85][655][656] The Wanted[35] and One Direction,[35][85][657] whose songs "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing" he credits as two of the first songs he learned on guitar.[67] He was also a fan of girl groups like Girls Aloud, The Saturdays and the Sugababes.[23]

British pop rock bands Busted and McFly were also early influences on Brennan,[35][658] whom he listened to in primary school, in addition to pop group S Club 7, though he kept his love for the latter classified: "To the [cool kids] Busted and McFly and [...] Take That was the coolest music. But you'd get beaten up if you admitted to liking S Club 7".[35] Brennan cites S Club 7's "Reach" as a childhood favourite, which he states "always motivated and inspired [him] to follow [his] dreams".[35][659] Brennan started to find Busted's music more relatable as he got older: "[Like "What I Go To School For" and "Britney" - a song about Britney Spears from the band's debut album -], I've had my share of crushes on teachers and female pop stars too".[35][660] Brennan was also inspired by Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Powter, whose song "Bad Day" he credits with inspiring him to peruse songwriting.[35] Powter's 2005 self-titled debut album was the first album Brennan bought.[661]

Brennan has described Frank Sinatra as "one of the greatest singers of all time".[662] Sinatra-inspired acts Robbie Williams, Michael Bublé and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane opened Brennan's mind to the world of swing and the music of Sinatra himself and other swing acts.[35][663] Brennan recalls hearing Williams' version of Charles Trenet's "Beyond the Sea" during the end credits of Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo when he was 4 years old as one of his earliest encounters with the genre.[35][Notes 118] He is also a fan of jazz and swing acts like Dean Martin,[35] Peggy Lee,[19][35][269][278] Judy Garland,[35][654] Billie Holiday,[35] Bobby Darin,[35] Cliff Edwards,[19][35] Phil Harris,[19][35] Louis Armstrong,[35] Nina Simone,[35] Sammy Davis Jr.[35] and Nat King Cole.[35]

Teen idols Justin Bieber and Cody Simpson were both effective influences on Brennan's songwriting and aspiration to pursue a career as a pop star during his early teenage years.[35][67][73][85][664][665][666] Brennan harboured a particular fondness and obsession for Bieber, which he kept secret - between himself and his teacher and songwriting partner, Mr. Croft - from his fellow peers at school, fearing the criticism he would have received had the word got out that he liked Bieber.[35][69][665] Hypocritically Brennan would slag Bieber off with his classmates and listen to him behind their backs.[35][69][665] Brennan recalls first becoming a belieber after seeing Bieber perform "Somebody To Love" and "Baby" on The X Factor in 2010.[35][665] The following year, Brennan became especially inspired by Bieber after seeing the latter's concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never at the cinema in 3D, after which he purchased his first Bieber album My Worlds: The Collection on CD, and later the film's soundtrack, Never Say Never: The Remixes.[35][67][665] Recollecting seeing the film, Brennan said: "From that day on I never stopped believing in my dreams".[665] Brennan was also inspired by teen pop acts like Jesse McCartney, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Austin Mahone and Greyson Chance.[665] He also cites Bieber's former guitarist Dan Kanter who produced Bieber's acoustic albums My Worlds Acoustic and Believe Acoustic as one of his guitar heroes.[35][67][665] Brennan's song "Here For You", the b-side to "Home" was inspired by the acoustic version of Bieber's song "Be Alright" from the Believe Acoustic album.[665]

Brennan was inspired by the YouTube covers of Tyler Ward, Justin Bieber, Cody Simpson, Austin Mahone and Jordan Jansen to join the video-sharing site and share covers of his own.[665] He also admires the covers and success of YouTuber and musician Conor Maynard.[665] By late 2013, Brennan's YouTube work became increasingly influenced by that of British vlogger and musician Charlie McDonnell (charlieissocoollike)[35][667] whom Brennan discovered through the short-lived four piece band Sons of Admirals, of which comprised of YouTube musicians Alex Day (nerimon), Edd Blann (eddplant), Tom Milsom (Hexachordal) and McDonnell himself.[35] McDonnell's solo music and album "This Is Me" inspired various aspects and themes of Brennan's debut self-titled album, including use of ukulele and humour.[22][30][35][145][152][668][669] In addition, Brennan was inspired to write a song about his favourite tv show, The Simpsons by McDonnell's time lord rock band, Chameleon Circuit and their passion for writing songs about their favourite tv show Doctor Who.[118]

Atlantic singer/songwriters Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran also paved way for Brennan when he started songwriting.[35][67][473] Brennan started playing guitar around the age of 12 when Sheeran's first mainstream hit "The A Team" was in the charts.[67] Around the same time one of Brennan's favourite tv channels was 4music whose chart shows he would watch on a daily basis.[35] Brennan first discovered Sheeran through an episode of The Crush where Sheeran played an acoustic version of "The A Team".[35][67][670] He later reflected that "after watching that performance I knew I wanted to become an acoustic artist, I wanted to be like [Ed Sheeran]".[67]

As an early teenager Brennan was also a fan of the American Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee which he first started watching after stumbling across a YouTube clip of cast member Chord Overstreet (Sam Evans) the son of country singer-songwriter Paul Overstreet performing Justin Bieber's "Baby" in the season two episode Comeback.[35][67] He stopped watching the show in mid-2013, following the death of Cory Monteith who played his favourite character Finn Hudson.[35][671][672] Glee inspired Brennan to peruse further education in music; he claims that school bored him so much that he would often skip lessons and dream of transferring to a music school to live out the fantasy of Glee.[35][673] The Jack Black comedy film School of Rock also inspired Brennan to become a music student,[35][673][674] on which he states, "It made me realise how fun studying music could be, it taught me more than anything back at school ever did".[674] He claims that he first learned Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" through the film,[674] and also credits the film soundtrack with introducing him to heavy metal.[35] Brennan was inspired to join MidKent College by former alumni Joseph Apostol and Jamie Johnson who both competed on the British talent show The Voice in 2013 and 2014 respectively.[675][676][677]

Growing up Brennan was also a fan of pop divas and pop princesses such as Rihanna,[678] Katy Perry,[679][680] Lady GaGa,[681][682][683] Beyoncé,[684][685] Kelly Rowland, Jennifer Lopez,[686] P!nk,[687][688] Kelly Clarkson,[23] Nicole Scherzinger,[689] Tulisa, Fergie, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Cheryl,[23][690] Kylie Minogue,[23] Jessie J,[691] Shakira, Christina Aguilera,[23] Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis,[23] Ellie Goulding, Pixie Lott, Rita Ora,[692] Nicki Minaj and Avril Lavigne,[693] although some he still occasionally listens to.[681] He also admires the voices of front-women such as Debbie Harry of Blondie,[694][630][629] Joan Jett of The Runaways and the Blackhearts,[695] Hayley Williams of Paramore, Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine and Chrissie Hyde of The Pretenders.[696] Brennan credits Lady GaGa as one of his earliest influences as a performer.[697] In October 2018, Brennan saw A Star Is Born which he described as "an amazing, beautiful, emotional, enjoyable, romantic, heartwarming story" and stated about GaGa in his review: "the experience of witnessing and seeing Lady GaGa, an amazing woman who I absolutely adored and worshiped as a child on the big screen was incredible".[698]

Throughout his early teenage years Brennan was heavily motivated and inspired by R&B and hip hop. Around the ages of twelve, thirteen and fourteen he was a fan of and inspired by R&B artists such as Justin Timberlake,[699][700] Usher,[701][702] Ne-Yo,[703] Pharrell Williams, CeeLo Green [704]and Chris Brown.[705][706] However, he still cites Timberlake as a major influence on him as a performer. He is also a fan of hip hop artists such as Eminem,[707][708][709][710] Snoop Dogg,[711][712] Kanye West,[713][714] Jay-Z, Ludacris, Tupac, 50 Cent, Plan B, Will Smith, Wiz Khalifa,[715] Dr. Dre and Tinie Tempah whose album 'Disc-Overy' him and his brother listened to as teenagers.[716] Brennan cites Eminem as his favourite rapper.[717][718][719][720] As a teenager he also listened to R&B, hip hop and grime artists like will.i.am, Wretch 32, Devlin, Professor Green, Wiley, Chipmunk, Drake, Example, LMFAO, N-Dubz, Dappy,[721] Fazer, Rizzle Kicks, Flo Rida, Labrinth, Pitbull, [722][723] Taio Cruz, Aloe Blacc, Iyaz, B.o.B, Travie McCoy,[724] K'naan,[725] Nelly, Shaggy, Jason Derulo,[726] Bad Meets Evil, R. 390. Michael Brennan on Facebook: "The other day at The Deep End gig with my fellow MidKent College students I just about managed to sing "Beat It" by Michael Jackson in the original key - although me and my course tutor, Kennie are tenors like the King of Pop himself was, songs like that are way out of our ranges; Michael Jackson and Bruce Dickinson are by far the hardest artist for males to emulate (even Patrick Stump can't sing it in the original key; Fall Out Boy had to tune it down to drop D); last time I sang it at my infamous (and somewhat controversial) Black History Month gig performance it was tuned down to C# - unfortunately the next day I woke up with my voice croaky and my falsetto flattened. By far my biggest challenge and bravest risk taken in all my years as a vocalist. I want to perform "Beat It" at the end of year show too, do I dare take the same risk?" [453]

  589. Michael Mikey Brennan (@michaelmikeybrennan) on Instagram: "25 years ago today, following up after 2 years since the release of the brilliant, Alternative Rock defining album, 'Nevermind', Nirvana released their third and final masterpiece, the brilliant and yet underrated (compared to 'Nevermind') but that said, a very successful album just the same, 'In Utero'. Another album that like 'Bleach', 'Nevermind' and all of Nirvana's recordings (including the b-sides, early demos and unreleased tracks) showcases the phenomenal and unique songwriting, vocal skills and simple, but remarkable riffs of Kurt Cobain, better than anything his infamous, overrated, talentless and slag of a wife (who is only successful because of him) could ever produce. 'Rape Me' is a personal favourite of mine, I used to play it in the college corridors for kicks and laughs. One of my college lectures had tickets to see Nirvana live on the In Utero tour and was two weeks away from experiencing and witnessing the ultimate Grunge rockers live in action, but the show was cancelled due to the unfortunate death of Kurt, forever one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Thank you for inspiring an entire generation of songwriters, Kurt (including yours truly, I'd give a left bollock just to write something as fantastic as you) we love you! #InUtero25 #RIPKurtCobain" [650]
